Flute
Dr. Yana (Zixuan) Yan is a passionate performer in a variety of genres including baroque, contemporary, chamber, and orchestral music. As a soloist, she recently performed Melinda Wagner Flute Concerto which received the Pulitzer Prize for the composition in 1999 with the Frost Repertory Orchestra and Carl Nielsen Flute Concerto with the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) symphony orchestra. Her interest also includes the new music. In 2021, she played the interactive music Emergent for flute and electronics by George Lewis. She also masters baroque flute and performed works of Jean Leclair, Pierre Danican Philidor, Michel Blavet George Philipp Telemann and François Couperin in 2021with the Frost Baroque Ensemble and the UNLV Baroque Ensemble during 2019-2021.
She has been a prizewinner of various festival and competitions including the 2021 Frost Concerto Competition, the 2018 UNLV Concerto Competition, the 2021 Quebec International Music Competition, the King’s Peak International Competition, the 2021 Charleston International Baroque Music Competition, a finalist of the 2021 Frost Artist Launch Competition, the Pacific Region International Summer Music Academy (PRISMA) in the summer of 2019, and the Madeline Island Chamber Music festival of 2016, the honorable mention in the Schubert Club Competition in Minnesota, and a selected performer on Thursday Musical Artist Series at MacPhail Center for Music in 2017.
Dr. Yana (Zixuan) Yan also takes the stage frequently as a chamber musician. She regularly performs in numbers of chamber ensembles; recent highlights include guest performer appearances at the Florida Flute Association with guitarist Fang Yuan.
As dedicated educator, Yan has taught the flute lessons and chamber music classes for music major and non-music major undergraduate and graduate since 2019 at the University of Miami as a teaching assistant. Yan has been invited to give masterclasses at music schools throughout the United States and China. Since 2019, she has created her flute studio where she has had the great fortune to work with many talented young musicians.
She earned her Bachelor of Music with Double Major in Flute and Piano from Wuhan Conservatory of Music in China, and Master of Music from University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, and Doctor of Musical Arts at the University of Miami, Frost School of Music. Before joining Frost, she spent one year in Artist Diploma at the Hartt School, University of Hartford, and her principal teachers include Jennifer Grim, Immanuel Davis, Janet Arms, Ling Yan, and Lan Wang. Other studies have been with Bonita Boyed, Bradley Garner, Jonathan Keeble, Wendy Williams, Karl-Heinz Schütz, Ransom Wilson.
