Hello everyone, my name is Jason Guan. I am a 10-year-old pianist from Phoenix, Arizona. It is my honor to join the Charleston Music Competition and share my music journey with you.
My love for music began at the age of five, when my mom gave me a small baby keyboard for my birthday. I still remember how excited I was to figure out melodies by ear, starting with Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star from YouTube. Soon, I was happily exploring other childhood favorites like Baby Shark, Happy Birthday, and the ABC Song.
Everything changed when I turned seven. For my birthday, my mom introduced me to my first piano teacher, Mrs. Aika, who opened the door to the world of music. Under her guidance, I prepared for my very first recital, a moment that made me realize how much joy performing could bring—not just to me, but to the people listening.
After studying with Mrs. Aika for about a year and a half, another exciting chapter began. I joined the Phoenix Conservatory of Music (PCM), a nonprofit community music school. There, I was honored to receive a scholarship to join their unique College Prep Program. Through this program, I gained an immersive experience making contemporary music with friends and learning important life skills for the future. I participated in music theory, ensemble, stage band, enrichment classes, and many recitals that helped me hone my skills and explore new concepts. Thanks to PCM, I also found countless opportunities to perform, from recitals to community stages, which built my confidence as a young musician.
PCM also inspired me to give back to the community. I joined a local nonprofit called The 8 Foundations, where I volunteer to bring live music to senior living centers and share joy with the elderly. I also participate in community events, using music to bring people together and spread happiness.
One of my biggest inspirations has been the composer Yiruma. When I first heard River Flows in You, I was moved by the way a simple melody could touch the heart so deeply. That moment made me realize what I hope to achieve through music: to share happiness and inspiration with others, just as Yiruma’s music inspired me.
