The DJ Marimba Duo was founded in 2019 by two exceptionally talented young marimbists — David Hsieh and Jonathan Yuen. At a time when the world was facing the severe challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the two chose to live together and share the beauty of the marimba through online performances, bringing its enchanting sound to audiences around the globe. They actively organized charity concerts and masterclasses, using music as a bridge to connect hearts, spreading hope and warmth to replace the fear and helplessness of that period.
Since 2021, the DJ Marimba Duo has been active in the San Francisco Bay Area, dedicated to promoting the art of the marimba. Through performances, education, and cross-disciplinary collaborations, they continue to expand the reach and appeal of percussion music.
Both musicians have studied under several internationally renowned masters, including Anthony Cirone, Gordon Stout, Jacob Nissly, and Professor Tammy Chen. They are also key members of the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra, California Percussion Ensemble, and Virtuoso Youth Orchestra.
From 2019 to 2025, the DJ Marimba Duo has received international acclaim, earning multiple first prizes at competitions such as the United States International Music Competition (USIMC), the National League of Performing Arts International Competition (NLPA), and the Virtuoso Music Competition (held in Paris, London, and Salzburg). They have also been invited multiple times to perform at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall in New York, showcasing their outstanding artistry and musical charm.
Currently, Jonathan Yuen studies at the University of Southern California (USC), while David Hsieh is a student at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). In addition to their dedication to music, they are also pursuing studies in biology and medical-related fields, aiming to balance professional excellence with personal ideals and live a life of meaning and value at every stage.
