Julia Chen’s musical journey began at 6 years old with piano, and music has remained a meaningful part of her life ever since. She is currently studying piano in the Precollege Division at the Manhattan School of Music, where she continues to deepen her musical understanding and expressive ability.
As Julia’s love for music has grown, so has her interest in the cello. In addition to her piano studies, she has pursued cello with dedication and has been recognized through excellent NYSSMA results and selection to All-County Orchestra. Both as a solo musician and an ensemble player, Julia continues to grow through discipline, curiosity, and a genuine love for music.
In addition to music, Julia also enjoys debate and mathematics. She has distinguished herself in debate competitions and is drawn to activities that challenge both her creativity and critical thinking. Julia brings the same focus, enthusiasm, and determination to each of her pursuits.
Watch Julia Chen perform Prelude No.7 Plainte Calme by Olivier Messiaen on the piano for the 2026 Classical Music Competition as part of the Charleston International Music Competition.
