Yian Chen, Elsbeth Chang, Anson Poon, Max Chen, Farrah Li, and Zachary Lee began their musical journey in the Creative Music class at My Music Box Education in Arcadia, CA, under the teaching of Ms. Lina Chu. Through singing, dancing, and movement, they discovered the joy of music in a playful and engaging environment, forming the foundation of their earliest musical memories.

Around the age of five, they transitioned to group piano classes with Ms. Lily Chen at the same studio. These weekly sessions not only helped them develop piano technique but also taught them the value of collaboration through duet and ensemble playing.

By fourth grade, each student chose their own instrumental path: Yian and Elsbeth picked the viola, Anson and Max began studying the cello, Farrah selected the double bass, and Zachary continued with piano. Despite their individual focuses, they remained musically connected—rehearsing and performing together, especially enjoying the chance to make music during the holidays and at annual concerts.

This May, the group had the special opportunity to perform all 14 movements of Carnival of the Animals by Saint-Saëns as a full ensemble. They eagerly looked forward to their Saturday evening rehearsals and are excited for many more musical collaborations in the years to come.

Watch Yian Chen, Elsbeth Chang, Anson Poon, Max Chen, Farrah Li, and Zachary Lee perform Finale from Carnival of the Animals by Saint-Saën on the viola, viola, cello, cello, double bass, and piano for the 2025 Summer Music Competition as part of the Charleston International Music Competition.
