Yangmingting Fang

Yangmingting Fang is a classically trained pianist from China. She completed her Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Piano Performance with a secondary concentration in Piano Pedagogy at The University of Alabama. Fang enjoys being a performer, a teacher, as well as a collaborative pianist. During her time at UA, she studied under Dr. Kevin Chance and served as a collaborative pianist and assistant music director with the UA Opera Theatre. In 2019, she received the Clara Wells Fellowship from American Matthay Association. She was also named winner for the 2022 Alabama Music Teachers Association Piano Competition.

As Fang developed her interest in piano pedagogy during her DMA degree, she began to share her research interest in national and regional conferences, including the MTNA (Music Teachers National Association) National Conference, the MTNA Collegiate Symposium, the College Music Society Southern Conference, the Alabama Music Teachers Association Conference, the Texas Music Teachers Association Convention, the MTNA Group Piano/Piano Pedagogy Forum, and the Florida State Music Teachers Association Conference. Her dissertation abstract titled The Influences of Folk Song and Folk Instruments in Chinese Piano Music was published in MTNA e-journal in April 2023.

As a passionate educator, Fang celebrates the individuality and diversity of each student. She explores diverse approaches to accommodate the needs of different types of students, and ensure that all types of learners perceive their strengths and motivations during the learning process. She leads the students through guided questions, engaging exercises, and relatable activities, creating a worthwhile learning experience and motivating the students to become enthusiastic learners and musicians.
