For two years beginning when he was six years old, Boyan was instructed in piano at the Department of Music Education of Nanjing Normal University in Nanjing, China. During that time, Boyan took the third place honors in the prestigious Bastien Piano Competition competing in the Nanjing Division. At eight years of age, Boyan and his family emigrated to the United States where Boyan continued his piano training in Irvine, CA under the guidance of Ms. I Ling Tsai.
