David Ruiz began his musical studies at the age of 14 with Isidro Pretell at the San Juan School in Trujillo, Perú. A few years later he studied with José Rodríguez and Francis Alarcón at the Regional Conservatory of Music “Carlos Valderrama”. He continued receiving private instruction in Lima, Peru with Prof. Henry Santander of the National Conservatory of Peru. In 2008, he joined the Trujillo Symphony Orchestra as a section bass and played with them for two seasons. He then joined the Municipal Symphony Orchestra of Piura in 2010, and stayed there for four years.
In 2011, David traveled to Quito, Ecuador to study with Maestro Rodrigo Becerra, Principal Double Bass player of the former Youth Orchestra of Americas and the National Symphony Orchestra of Ecuador. Upon going back to Peru, he won the Principal Bass position of the Arequipa Symphony Orchestra in 2014, and has been a member of this orchestra for 10 years. In 2012 he traveled to the United States to take lessons with Dr. Marcos Machado at the Premier Orchestra Institute, a festival he recently attended again in 2024 with a generous scholarship.
In 2022, David completed his studies at the National University of San Agustín in the city of Arequipa under the tutelage of the Prof. Carola Linares.
David Ruiz is currently the Principal Double Bass of the Arequipa Symphony Orchestra (OSA), Double Bass Professor at the “Luis Duncker Lavalle” Conservatory of Music, Cello Teacher at the Sacred Hearts School and was recently appointed Musical Director of the “Appassionato” Chamber Orchestra.
David has participated in festivals such as the International Bach Festival, the Chengdu International Music Festival in China, Raymi Bass Festival in Cusco, Peru, Premier Orchestra Institute in the USA, among others. He has collaborated with artists such as Pedro Rodríguez Chirinos on the album Lapislázuli, Killary on Luna Arequipeña and filmmaker Verónica Arze.
In 2024 he began studying privately with Dr. Nathaniel De La Cruz, the Double Bass Teaching Artist at YOLA, the educational program of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and a student of David Allen Moore at USC Thornton School of Music. David Ruiz is committed to refine his artistry and musicianship through Dr. De La Cruz’s high demands and commitment to his students.
David Ruiz plays a Rotaru model double bass made by luthier Luciano Golia nicknamed “Il Guerriero”. This bass was owned previously by his teacher, Nathaniel De La Cruz.
