Ian Lee

Ian Lee, a current senior in Fairfax High School, born in Fairfax, Virginia, began his violin studies at the age of seven. He currently studies with June Huang in Fairfax, Virginia. His previous teachers include Dr. Ae Young Sun and Dr. Min Sun Kang. He won second place at the 2021 Metropolitan Music Festival Competition, received second prize at the 2021 Charleston International Music Competition(Romantic Music Competition), was second prize winner without first prize at the 2021 Asian American Music Society(AAMS) Competition, was third place at the Young Musicians Inspiring Change (YMIC) International competition, and was third place at the Great Composers Competition Series. He has been a part of many orchestras, including the Virginia All-State Orchestra in 2021 and 2022, the Northern Virginia Senior Regional Orchestra in 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022, the Northern Virginia District Orchestra in 2018, the American Youth Philharmonic Orchestra in 2019-2020 and 2022, and the American Youth Concert Orchestra in 2018-2019. Last summer, Ian attended the Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival with a scholarship where he studied with Francesca DePasquale from Oberlin College and James Stern from the University of Maryland. In the summer of 2021, he attended the Sewanee Summer Music Festival in Tennessee with a scholarship. While at Sewanee, Ian studied with Dr. Gregory Lee from The University of Oklahoma. At Sewanee, he was also associate concertmaster, assistant concertmaster, principal second violin, and associate principal for the second violins. In the summer of 2019, he also attended the Summer Intensive Chamber Music Camp at George Mason University. He has also been a part of the Chamber Orchestra for all two years at Rocky Run Middle School. In June of 2021, Ian received a masterclass from Sibbi Bernhardsson, an Oberlin Conservatory of Music professor of violin. In July of 2020, he also received a masterclass from Dr. Joanna Owen, a George Mason faculty member. He is also currently the concertmaster and was the principal second violinist(2019-2020) in the Fairfax High School Chamber Orchestra. He is a good-standing member in the Tri-M Honor Society in Fairfax High School. Not only does he perform for his own good, but he also provides music for the community. He is currently a chief intern for the Tacy Foundation, an organization centered on providing music for senior homes, and has previously volunteered at the Spring festival and Baroque festival from the Northern Virginia Music Teachers Association(NVMTA).
