Joshua Cheng is a rising senior at Bellaire High School. Originally from Illinois, Joshua is currently settled in Houston, TX He started playing violin when he was 9. He currently studies with Tong Yan, first violinist from Houston Symphony Orchestra first violinist Tong Yan.
He made his debut with the Southern Illinois Symphony Orchestra at the age of 13. Joshua has had a variety of orchestral and soloist experiences. In the Southern Illinois Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Professor Edward Benyas, Joshua has had the opportunity to accompany renowned musicians such as Rachel Barton Pine, Orli Shaham, Kiril Laskarov, and more. He has also performed with the Southern Illinois University Symphony Orchestra of Edwardsville and Southeast Missouri Symphony Orchestra. In his summers, he has taken part in Southern Illinois Music Festival “SI Fest” and various other gigs.
In Houston, Joshua has played as the first violinist of the Houston Youth Symphony 2020/2021 under the baton of Dr. Michael Webster from Rice University. Joshua has served as the concertmaster of the TMEA HS Symphony Region Orchestra, and a first violinist of the TMEA HS State Orchestra. He has had masterclasses with renowned violinists Frank Huang and David Taylor.
Joshua’s accolades include receiving an honorable mention in the Houston International Music Competition, a finalist in the Southeast Missouri Symphony Orchestra Rising Star Competition, honorable mention of MTNA in the junior division for Illinois, runner up in the Texas Clear Lake Concerto Competition.
In his spare time, he also takes part in organizations such as Music of Harmony and Back to Bach where he hopes to share music with people in his community and help other children find joy in music as he did.
