Matthew Joosung Chung

Matthew Chung, 15 years old, is entering 10th grade at Methacton High School. He has been a cello student of Hsiao-Ming Chen for 10 years at Community Music School (CMS) in Trappe, PA. He also attends Center for Gifted Young Musicians (CGYM) of Temple Music Prep where he plays in chamber ensembles.

Matthew was the winner of the Bucks County Symphony Orchestra’s Youth Concerto Competition in 2021, making his solo debut with their orchestra. He won 1st place in Junior Strings in Tri-County Concerts 2021 Youth Festival, and 2nd place this year in Senior division. Matthew was the PA State Alternate for junior strings in the MTNA Competition. He was a 1st prize winner at the state level in the Opus Competition, as well as the Crescendo International Competition, in which he performed at Carnegie Hall. In the summer of 2021, Matthew was a 2nd place winner in Philadelphia International Music Festival’s Concerto Competition. In 2019, his Eridanus Trio from CMS won 2nd place in Tri-County’s Festival for Junior Ensemble. His CGYM Quintet won Silver this year in the Bosendorfer Youth Music Festival. At both CGYM and PIMF, he participated in masterclasses with Philadelphia Orchestra cellist, Priscilla Lee. In his freshman year, Matthew was the 2nd chair cellist in PMEA District 11 Orchestra.

Matthew is a distinguished honor roll student. In school he enjoys math and learning about history. Aside from cello, he plays soccer on his high school JV team and also competes on his track team with his friends.
