BIO

Described as “expressive, crisp, alert, comfortable and interprets every passage with exceptional taste and much joy”, 14-year-old Micah Chan is a multi-talented musician from Illinois. As a pianist, he has been a student of his mom, Christina Tio, and currently also studies with Winston Choi.

Micah is regular prizewinner and gold medalist for consecutive years at festivals and competitions – including the Society of American Musicians (SAM) Competition, Steinway Junior Piano Competition, Illinois State Music Teachers Association (ISMTA) Competition, as well as Sonata-Sonatina Festivals and competitions organized by local chapters of Music Teacher National Association (MTNA). Most recently, Micah was named a semi-finalist at International Young Artist Concerto Competition (IYACC) and débuted with a professional orchestra in January 2023. He is also the 3rd prize winner at Radda Rise International Piano Competition 2023 in the ages 14-17 category. Micah has also been named a finalist at Music Lights the Way Festival organized by Royal Conservatory of Music, and will be competing in the finals at Koerner Hall, Toronto in March 2023.

Micah’s exceptional piano skills are showcased through his frequent recital performances and masterclasses with renowned pianists such as Alan Chow, Frank Wibaut, Jerome Lowenthal, and James Giles. His recent repertoire includes Bach’s French Suite No. 6 in E, BWV 817 and Fantasia in C minor, BWV 906; Beethoven’s Sonatas No. 25 in G, Op. 79, No. 8 in C minor, Op. 13 and Piano Concerto No.2 in Bb, III; Chopin’s Fantaisie-Impromptu in C-sharp minor, Op. 66, and Étude Op. 10, No. 3 as well as Land of the Misty Giants by Oscar Peterson.

In addition to piano, Micah is also an avid cellist and composer. He began playing cello at the age of 5 and currently studies with Avi Friedlander at the Music Institute of Chicago. As a composer, Micah is the State and East Central Division winner of the MTNA Composition Competition 2023. Music is just one of many forms of personal expression for Micah, who also has passions for public speaking and graphic design. Being homeschooled and partially enrolled at public school, he also enjoys the opportunity to excel at Science Olympiad tournaments, and indulges in hands-on creative projects at home.
