Michelle Dayeon Koo

Michelle Koo is a junior at Gunn High School. She has been playing the viola for six years and studies with Adam Smyla. In 2018, Michelle won a scholarship with viola in the PAUSD Music Teachers’ Scholarship Competition and the Honorable Mentions at the Korea Times Youth Music Competition. She has been invited to play at the Junior Bach Festival for the past three years. In 2020, she won second place in the United States International Music Competition and in 2021, she won first place, as well as Best New Piece Prize, in the Northern California Viola Society (NCVS) Young Violists Competition. Since 2019, she has been a violist in the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra (SFSYO) and is now co-principal of the viola section. She has been selected to participate in the National Youth Orchestra 2 (NYO2) program of 2021 and 2022. Additionally, she was principal violist of NYO2 2022. She was also admitted to attend the Boston Tanglewood Institute’s Viola Workshop in 2020. Prior to learning viola, she played violin for four years under Davis Law and has been acknowledged in the PAUSD Music Teachers’ Scholarship Competition. Other than music, she is a fourth-degree black belt in Taekwondo. In her free time, she loves to read, draw, watch movies, and hang out with her family and dog, Barry.
