Ryan Zargham Cheng

Hi, I’m Ryan Cheng and I am a violinist. I started playing the violin when I was 5, and began lessons at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music at age 7. I studied with Professor Kurt Sassmannshaus and fell in love with the program — in Starling, I was in the orchestra, chamber groups, had performance opportunities, and more. Also, I spent a lot of time playing orchestrally outside of Starling: I played as concertmaster of my high school honors orchestra and concertmaster of the Dayton Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. After 8 years in Ohio, I moved to Los Angeles when I was 15. Leaving the people that taught me so much was upsetting, but in LA I’ve been able to find tons of opportunities to continue playing music and improving. I now study with Ms. Joan Kwuon and play in festivals, my school symphony, and the Los Angeles Youth Orchestra.

Something else that I really love within music is teaching. At my high school in Ohio, I founded the Tri-M Music Honors Society in which we volunteered as musicians within the community. Here in LA, I lead a club called Plot Twist, in which the musicians at my high school teach music to underprivileged children around the city. I’ve been teaching a little girl named Mika recently, and even though I’m the teacher, I’ve learned so much.
