Sophia Liu

Sophia Liu is a 16-year-old violinist from Cary, North Carolina, and a junior at Cary Academy. She started playing the violin at the age of 3 and currently studies with Hsiao-Mei Ku of Duke University. She won 2nd prize at the Great Composers Master of Violin Sonata Competition in 2019 and silver prize at the Golden Beijing National Violin Competition in 2018. Sophia has also performed in masterclasses by the Parker Quartet, Jeffrey Multer, Lv Si Qing. She frequently attends music camps in the summer, receiving the Young Artist Merit Scholarship Award for the Eastern Music Festival summer of 2019, being accepted to the North Carolina Governor’s School for the summer of 2020, and attending the Interlochen Center for the Arts music camp in 2016. Sophia also enjoys playing in orchestras and chamber groups. She received a full scholarship to play in the WCPE Leadership String Quartet of the North Carolina Chamber Music Institute this past June and has been rehearsing with her group ever since. During the year, she is a member of the Triangle Youth Philharmonic and serves as concertmaster of the Cary Academy Symphony Orchestra. She was 4th chair at the 2019 North Carolina Honors Orchestra and will be a 1st violinist at the NAfME All-National Honors Ensemble for this coming January.
