Winston Yu

Winston started to play cello at age 6 with Haeyoon Krentz. Only a year into his cello lessons, he started to spent hours composing his cello pieces. Though most of them were not playable, still he dreamt of one day, Yo-yo Ma could play his music. In 2021, Winston won the 2nd Place, the Best Performance by First-Time Participant, and the Best Performance of a Baroque Composition in Simon Fiset String Competition. He won as the finalist in New York International Classical Music Competition 2021, and the third prize in International Grande Music Competition. In 2022, he was invited to play at Merkin Hall, New York. Also, Winston got honorable mention in Simon-Fiset Competition, first place in Class for Cello-Bass Solo in Performing Arts Festival of the Eastside, and first prize in 2022 Charleston International Music Competition. Winston joined SYSO (Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra) during 2021-2022 academic year and played solo at the Benaroya Hall with the orchestra. In 2022, he won the SYSO concerto competition and will perform as solo again at one of SYSO’s upcoming concerts.
