About Kyungmi Nam
Kyungmi Nam is a pianist whose artistry has been heard and celebrated internationally in solo, chamber music and concerti repertoire. Reknowned for the sophisticated tonal reflections in her sound and the rich expressiveness of her interpretations, her playing has been praised by New York Concert Review for its “awareness of detail, clear sense of compositional structure, and a lively, vibrant sound with a wide palette of dynamics and colors,” reflecting a synthesis of intellectual rigor and refined musical artistry.
Since her New York debut recital at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in 2005, Ms. Nam has appeared in major venues across the United States, Europe, and Asia, including Merkin Concert Hall at Kaufman Center, Steinway Hall, The DiMenna Center for Classical Music, Symphony Space and National Opera Center in New York, as well as Palazzo Fava in Bologna. Her performances have been supported by institutions such as Steinway & Sons, Yamaha Pianos, Manhattan School of Music, Korean Cultural Center New York, NYC Bar Association, Universal Arts Center in Seoul (Korea), National Music Festival in Caprarola (Italy), Hindemith Music Centre in Blonay (Switzerland), and San Colombano Museum – Tagliavini Collection in Bologna (Italy), reflecting broad international recognition of her career.
A dedicated advocate for new music, Ms. Nam has premiered numerous solo piano works and chamber music in close collaboration with composers including Douglas DaSilva, Marisol Gentile, David Reeves, and Craig Woodward, contributing to the expansion of the contemporary piano repertoire.
In 2024, she joined Killington Music Festival in Vermont, as Collaborative Pianist in Residence, where she appeared regularly in faculty recitals and chamber concerts and worked with guest artists across disciplines, emphasizing ensemble performance and artistic leadership.
Kyungmi Nam received First Prize at National Young Artists Competition of Korea at age ten, leading to the beginning of her performance career at age eleven with her orchestral debut in 1992 as soloist with Seoul Art Orchestra in Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 1, laying foundation for her long-standing engagement with concerti literature and international concert engagements.
She holds both Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from Manhattan School of Music, where she also studied in the Precollege Division. Her artistic development has been enriched through extended study in early music and organ literature in Italy (Corso Internaziole di Musica Antica & Organist/Harpsichordist Liewe Tamminga) and through master classes with numerous distinguished international artists. She is the recipient of prestigious awards including the Debussy Prize at the XXV Edition of IBLA Grand Prize International Competition (2006) and the Young Artist Piano Award from Artist International Presentations, Inc. (2005).
Dedicated to cultivating the next generation of pianists, Ms. Nam emphasizes both individual artistry and collaborative musicianship. Her teaching fosters expressive interpretation and critical listening, guiding students to develop technique while cultivating their own musical voice for a lifelong connection to music. Ms. Nam works with students of diverse ages and backgrounds, and her students have achieved awards and recognitions across the U.S. and internationally through her mentorship.
