Claire Jian Choi

Claire Jian Choi

Claire Jian Choi is a student at Norman Borlaug Elementary School in Coralville Iowa, USA. Influenced by her mother, who majored in classical music composition, and her father, an acoustician, she started piano at the age of 4 and the flute at age 6. Sasha Garber was her first teacher. At age 7 she had her first flute recital after completing Suzuki Vol. 1. When in-person lessons became difficult due to the pandemic, she started practicing the flute on her own and completed Suzuki Vol. 2. At the age of 8, she started taking lessons again with a Korean teacher Hyunji Noh. That was when she switched to a full-size flute and started learning vibrato and double- tonguing skills. In the next six months, she finished the props of Gariboldi Etudes and Suzuki Vol. 3. Then she moved on to concerto pieces including Taffanel and Gaubert as well as Handel’s sonatas and Mozart’s rondo. Her favorite performers are Jean-Pierre Rampal, Emmanuel Pahud, and Jasmine Choi.
